What is the Endocannabinoid System, referred to as ECS, and why we should care?

There’s been a lot of press about CBD oil and you’ve probably heard about the potential benefits but may not understand much about it. When someone is talking about CBD oil or Cannabidiol, they are talking about the naturally occurring compounds found in the cannabis plant and more specifically the oil extracted from the hemp plant. These compounds interact with the body’s Endocannabinoid System (ECS) which was unknown to the scientific community until it’s discovery in 1992. The ECS is found throughout the human body, primarily in the brain. According to leading researchers, it is one of the most important physiologic systems involved in establishing and maintaining human health.

According to the UCLA Cannabis Research Initiative (UCLA-CRI), the effects of cannabis on the human body were little understood before 1992 and only limited research has been done since then due to the prohibition of marijuana and its sister plant, hemp until the last few years. What is known is that the human body produces these cannabis-like molecules which are present in breast milk and released during activities such as meditation and exercise to name a few. They are responsible for the calming effect of meditation and what’s known as the runners high that athletes experience.

Cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant activate the same receptors as the endocannabinoids that are naturally occurring in our bodies. The main function of the ECS is to maintain biological harmony, known as homeostasis, in response to changes in the environment. The ECS is involved in a wide variety of processes; including pain, memory, mood, appetite, stress, sleep, metabolism, immune system and reproduction. So basically, if one or more of these systems is out of alignment, the ECS will try to correct it. Many of our clients have told us CBD helps relieve pain, insomnia and anxiety. We personally use CBD daily to reduce inflammation and help with sleep regulation.

The UCLA Cannabis Research Initiative is one of the first academic programs in the world dedicated to the study of cannabis. Their mission is to advance scientific understanding of the impacts of cannabis on the body, brain, mind, and society.

According to the National Institute of Health, enhancing the endocannabinoid system by introducing external cannabinoids like CBD could be useful in treating a variety of medical ailments. We are only beginning to discover how cannabinoids can help and heal. Can CBD help you?

The primary takeaway: The ECS is working to maintain balance in the body and CBD can help.
